There are four suppression lists and they mean four different things. Bounces are the recipient’s server refusing delivery. Blocks are usually reputation or content. Spam reports are a human pressing a button. Invalid addresses are typos and dead domains.

What is actually behind a five-point drop?

A companion pulls the stats for the window, pulls every suppression entry created in the same window, and groups them by type and recipient domain. The shape is usually specific: 400 blocks from one large mailbox provider over two days, or a spike in spam reports tracing to one campaign.

Then it goes and checks whether that provider announced a policy change, or whether your own signup form started accepting nonsense. Both have happened to everyone.

The four lists, read separately

Spam reports get read first because they are the most damaging and the most informative.

A companion pulls them with dates and ties them to the campaign that produced them where the data allows. Ten spam reports from one send is a content problem you can fix this week.

Invalid addresses point upstream at a form. Bounces point at list quality or one broken domain. Blocks point at reputation or content. Separating them turns a vague worry into four small tasks.

How do you check domain authentication is still right?

By reading it from outside.

SPF, DKIM and DMARC live in DNS, and the classic failure is somebody editing a zone for an unrelated reason and clipping a record.

A companion reads the platform’s own authentication state and then checks what public DNS actually resolves, which is a browser job and takes a minute.

Where the retention window bites

Email Activity on the standard plan keeps only a few days of message-level history, with longer retention sold as an add-on, as of this writing. The incident happened on the 3rd and there is nothing left to read.

So schedule the reading instead of reacting to it. A weekly routine pulls stats and suppressions and writes them somewhere permanent, which fits with your other operations routines.
