Monday, 8:40: who is out, who starts

The who’s-out calendar is a smaller, lower-permission read than the full time-off request list, and it is the right one for a Monday note: names and dates, not reasons and balances. A companion pulls the week, cross-checks start dates in the directory, and drafts the message.

Slack is also a native integration, so the draft gets staged in the channel you name. It does not post itself. A message naming who is on medical leave is not one you want sent because an agent inferred you would have wanted it.

What should a companion be told about employee data?

As little as the job needs, and BambooHR makes that natural: fetching an employee returns only first and last name unless you pass an explicit list of fields. A companion has to name what it is asking for, which turns the blast radius into a decision.

“Start date and department for everyone in Support” is a narrow read. Naming the fields makes the difference visible before the read rather than after, the same instinct that runs through operations.

• Reads: the directory, an employee by named fields, application users with login access, who is out in a window, time-off requests, saved custom reports and their rows, and employee documents.
• Writes: create and update an employee. Both need real permissions on every field touched, and both wait for your approval.
• Not present: payroll, approvals, e-signature, or anything that emails an employee.

Run the monthly report without the calendar reminder

Somebody built a custom report two years ago, and it still gets exported to CSV every month and pasted into a sheet. A companion lists the saved reports, runs the one you name, pages through every row, and writes the result into your spreadsheet.

Saved reports are the only paginated BambooHR endpoint, so a large one comes back complete rather than truncated at page one. The companion then notices that headcount by department disagrees with last month by eleven, and puts that at the top. That is the data extraction half of the job.

Which records are missing something?

The fifteen with no emergency contact.

The directory reconciled against your identity provider. The three people whose manager field points at someone who left in April. A companion finds all of that in one read, and every item is a one-minute fix now that you know it exists.

For compensation, employment status and anything that changes a person’s legal relationship with the company, a companion proposes the diff and you commit it. BambooHR permissions are the real gate on every field it touches, and running this integration read-only is a perfectly good configuration.
