Agentic AI vs generative AI

Generative AI hands you an artifact. Agentic AI changes something: a record updated, a specific follow-up drafted for every person from yesterday’s demos, all of it waiting behind approval cards.

Generative AI produces content: text, images, code, audio. You provide a prompt, it returns an artifact, and the artifact is the whole output. Agentic AI pursues a goal across several steps, choosing and using tools along the way, and its output is a changed state in the world.

Failure. A bad generation is a paragraph you delete. A bad agentic run has already done something.
Evaluation. You judge generative output by reading it. You judge an agentic system by whether tasks completed correctly and what they touched on the way, which is why we publish our method at the benchmark spec.

Where is the line in practice?

Ask ChatGPT to write a follow-up email and you have generative AI: you copy the text, decide who gets it, and press send. Ask a companion to follow up with everyone from yesterday’s demos and it reads your calendar and your CRM to find who attended, drafts a specific message per person referencing what was discussed, and queues them for approval in your real inbox.

If you read it, think, and then write something yourself, the generative part was the whole job.
